Spore!

I'd almost convinced myself not to get the game -- better things to do with my time, mostly -- but then the boy got it and I have near-constant access to his computer, so I've logged a couple hours today, and over the next couple of weeks I'll probably be playing it more than is healthy.

The interface is a little clunky, but that's partially because I'm not used to it, and I've only gotten about halfway through the creature level. Though most of the advertising focused on that stage, I have a suspicion that most of the action happens at the civilization stage and beyond, so I'll reverse judgment until I've seen how that plays. I am, however, very impressed with the game manual -- it's the best I've seen in a while, a major plus for a game as varied and complicated as Spore purports to be.

If anyone reading this happens to pick up the game -- the account I'm sharing now is "medievalguy88," if you want to drop me a note in-game.

  1. I bought Spore on Sunday, and played for 12 straight hours. My resulting empire of evil space raptors is gradually consuming its corner of the galaxy in the Space Stage.

Yesterday I started up a second species of omnivores and have played them through to the Creature Stage.

Wonderful game, in my opinion. I didn't bother touching the manual and just jumped right in. A few things didn't click straight away, but for the most part I was able to figure it out.

The game is least involving at the cell stage, and most interesting at the civilization stage. Once it hits the space stage things get very complicated very quickly, and I rapidly got swamped by juggling the myriad facets of building an empire with what amounts to just a single ship versus many dozens of enemies.

Which, of course, is not to say it's not fun....just that it's a lot of work.

If you're curious to see some of my creations, my tag is Balwar. I'll put you on my buddies list later this week, when I have a chance to play again.

  2. Empire running is crazy . . . I ticked off The Grox, so now I'm letting them have everything but my home world, because otherwise I'm too busy responding to alien attacks to get anything done. Hopefully that center of the galaxy thing clears that problem up.

Blergh. Games shouldn't be this much work.

And the internet is currently not co-operating on the Spore computer, so it may be a while before the universe can see my madness. But we'll get there.
