Headed out to my friendly not-so-local gaming store on Friday (the closest one doesn't do Friday Night Magic) and came back with a deck that looks like this:
1 Blade-Tribe Berserkers
1 Ezuri's Archers
1 Goblin Gaveleer
1 Immolating Souleater
1 Kiln Walker
1 Molder Beast
1 Ogre Resister
1 Oxidda Scrapmelter
1 Spin Engine
1 Training Drone
1 Accorder's Shield
1 Barbed Battlegear
1 Flayer Husk
1 Strider Harness
1 Horizon Spellbomb
1 Act of Aggression
1 Beast Within
2 Burn the Impure
1 Concussive Bolt
1 Lead the Stampede
1 Copperline Gorge
Rally the Forces
2 Victorious Destruction
This actually isn't the deck exactly as I played it; at the end of the night I accidentally shuffled my side-board in and thus lost the original configuration. This version is actually rather better than the one that I actually ran, with which I did okay -- the first match I got completely rolled over twice, the second I won twice, and the third I lost one, won the second, and then lost the third.
This was the second draft I've been to and the first with the full New Phyrexia/Mirrodin Besieged/Scars of Mirrodin lineup (the first was all Mirrodin Besieged), so I got somewhat confused and overwhelmed and wasn't able to keep track of what I'd already picked and what I wanted to pick as well as I wanted to. I didn't pick up nearly enough creatures, and probably not enough artifacts/equipment considering the number of other cards that required them to work well. I also passed up a chance to pick up an Alpha Tyrannax halfway through the third pack, which was just silly. I don't even remember what I got instead.
I'll be heading out another one of these Friday's fairly soon, probably to check out the other FNM option within driving distance, and my plan then is to try out some manner of mixed infect strategy -- probably G/W, G/B, or G/U, depending on which color gets me the best infect creatures and removal, and whether I can get some good-with-infect-type support cards. Otherwise -- R/W aggro!
One odd thing I noticed was that no one I played against used Phyrexian mana the whole game. Neither did I. Act of Aggression showed up late in the game when it did show up (and I really hadn't gotten the hang of using it yet anyway), and that was really the one thing I was thinking of seriously using. I probably should have put Apostle's Blessing in my main deck, but I had enough low-cost cards as it was.
It's been ten years since I played any Magic. This post was like a foreign language I can pronounce, but not understand.ReplyDelete
Yeah, honestly I don't have any reason to believe that anyone who already reads my blog plays enough modern Magic to care about this stuff. But it's really all I've been up to gamingwise lately.ReplyDelete
The Badger King says (since it won't let me select my Blogger identity to post...)ReplyDelete
I've started playing Magic again with some frinds lately, but we just buy whatever we can, and play for fun. I find modern Magic (ie. the cards that have come out since I stopped playing around HOMELANDS) compares to magic much the same as 4th Edition comapres to 1st Edition.... some of the mechanics are still the same, but the game has changed so radically, it's almost like a different game. I still play the ORIGINAL Dules of the Planeswalkers/Spells of the Ancients computer game on my computer every day. I have the new Steam powered one.... but I hate it. My biggest wish right now is if the Magic Encyclopedia would work on the internet reliably, so I could just use it to play against my friends (as it had a built-in "deck tester" utility, which allowed you you "play" an opponent, but you had to know the rules, as it was just like a regular game just over the Internet... no computer ruling). I miss the old days of Alpha through about Ice Age Magic... now THAT was fun. 8)

Oh, and as a caveat.... trying to play magic for fun when you opponent is using Unhinged and Unglued edition cards is anough to make me crazy. My buddy has them in ALL his decks. My counter-strategy was to drop some coin on four World-Bottling Kit cars, so I can just strip all of those eidtions out of his deck when I play him. 8)
Ahhh, Magic is some good stuff, my primary game really, since it doesn't matter who can actually make it from week to week.ReplyDelete
Drafting is probably my favorite, but it usually takes a few before you get the hang of it. Most fun for your money with Magic, I think!
I play online pretty regularly, though I tend to stick to core set drafting. I got tired of trying to follow the expansions after a while (lorwyn I think?)ReplyDelete
Hmm. Interesting. You wouldn't happen to know of a reliable way to pick up specific cards, would you? A friend let me make a deck from his spares, and it worked well enough that I'm trying to rebuild it.ReplyDelete
(If it helps to know the specific cards, let me know.)
The Badger King: I started originally around 7th edition, and while it seems a lot more interesting now that's largely because I was 13 and had too short of an attention span for the game. Can't really comment on the early stuff, although for whatever reason I find the modern environment endlessly fascinating. Or I will for the four months these things usually last.ReplyDelete
Forrest: I'm getting there with the drafting. Came in 2nd in the first draft I ever played in, actually. But yeah, I love the flexibility that Magic has as my weekly/semi-weekly game.
Ragnorakk: I am afraid of online Magic. Right now it's strictly off-line for me so it remains something that improves my physical social life. I'd love to be able to draft core set whenever I wanted, though.
C'nor: Depends on how many cards you're looking at. I'm told that Ebay is the cheapest option for singles, but if you're getting a whole bunch at once, http://sales.starcitygames.com/addadeckform.php is the easiest option I know of.
