Yay for stereotypes. While it is true that some women (my sister) are more talkative than some men (her boyfriend), it is also true that some men (my ex-boyfriend) are more talkative than some women (my ex-girlfriend). It's just a personality thing. Gender stereotypes are really dumb. It's generally a bad plan to make a blanket statement about 3.3 billion people at once.
Also methinks in ye olde days, when women weren't supposed to talk in at fancy dinner conversations or something, and they'd try, it came off as incredibly talkative. so then that stereotype carries over into today.
This particular stereotype is, essentially, a mechanism to prevent women from speaking out and being listened to, the basic currency of power. It's not just dumb, it's insidious. This is true of most stereotypes: they exist because they are convenient to some group.
That said, this is one of the most popular in pop culture, which is why it's a big deal that there has been Actual Science done on it. It's very nice to have something so definitive to point to. To which to point.
