A Declaration of Intent

I couldn't think of anything to write when Gary Gygax died. Still can't. The man changed my life, but you know that. That's why you're here. He did the same thing for you.

So instead, I'm going to do something. Yesterday, I started mapping the first level of a dungeon. I'll have at least three levels finished by July 27th, so I can celebrate that day with a small expedition.

With any luck, it'll be ready for play long before that. I'm still committed to the Traveller game for the remainder of the semester, but I'm hoping I'll get a chance to do some solo gaming on the side.

Because somewhere in this yet unmade dungeon is a room, with a plaque, or an engraving, or something else of that sort, and it reads, "In memory of Gary Gygax, Dungeon Master." It's not enough, but it'll have to do.

  1. Even though I'm running a Spycraft campaign, I should do a tribute adventure for him. Maybe I could have one of the people their looking for hide in the catacombs underneath an old European city. That's about as close to a dungeoncrawl I could think of in a modern setting.

  2. Sounds like a fun idea. What system are you writing it for, and do you plan to share it on your blog or in one of the old school magazines?

  3. Samuel Van Der Wall: I sent my Traveller group of spacefaring smoothtalkers into a lost temple to retrieve a golden idol guarded by degenerate snake men. Dungeons are fun.

trollsmyth: Swords & Wizardy, mostly, with bits cribbed from AD&D and elsewhere. I'm not sure if I'm going to publish it, because I'm not sure if it'll be publishable. (And the people I'd be running it for do occasionally read the blog.) But definitely bits and pieces of it will find their way here.

  4. Have at it Oddysey. In light of your recent satori on the attraction of dungeon crawling, it seems like a natural progression.

Be warned, however, that you might just discover how incredibly entertaining it is to build a big ol' dungeon and succumb to its siren song...
